Yellow Springs Police Department offers full testing services for the position of Police Officer through National Testing Network (NTN). General Statement of Duties and Distinguishing Feature of Class
The Village of Yellow Springs Police Department is a community-oriented policing agency. The Village of Yellow Springs Police Department believes that contemporary challenges require the police to provide full-service policing, proactive and reactive, by involving the community directly with them as partners in the process of identifying, prioritizing, and solving problems. Citizens share in the rights and responsibilities implicit in identifying, prioritizing, and solving problems as full-fledged partners with the police.
The Village of Yellow Springs provides police services to the citizens with a small but efficient complement of police officers who must operate in a broad range of activities.
This is a public service job based in trust, credibility, and competency. It is a critical requirement of this position that the incumbent displays the desire and ability to perform and behave (on duty, as well as off duty) in a manner that does not damage or endanger the loss of trust with the public, co-workers, and other public safety forces. The candidate must meet the following qualifications and requirements at time of appointment.
Schedule:
The Village of Yellow Springs requires part time officers to work a minimum of two (2) shifts per month.
This position will primarily support the following shifts:
- Saturdays - 7:00pm – 7:00am
- Sundays - 7:00pm – 7:00am
Additional hours may be available during the week on various shifts
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Must maintain competency in firearms qualification requirements promulgated under the Ohio Revised Code and departmental policy
- Be able to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action to be taken.
- Be able to cope with situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others
- Hold Exceptional Communication Skills by demonstrating the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; as well as read, write, and speak professionally and effectively
- Must have the ability to understand, interpret, and apply principles of police procedure in a variety of situations, must be able to comprehend, remember, and apply legal concepts involved in the administration of the due process of law, and
- Must have a high degree of skill in interpersonal relations and integrity. The Yellow Springs Police Officers interact with the public on a daily basis for various reasons.
Minimum Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Requirements
- Applicant must hold a current OPOTA Peace Officer Certificate and be in a good standing status.
- Applicants must possess or be able to obtain a valid Ohio driver’s license by time of appointment, and have a good driving record.
- Must successfully pass the Village of Yellow Springs Police Field Training Program within an acceptable amount of time that is determined by the Chief or designee. The minimum time for the FTO program is currently 12 weeks.
- Officers are required to successfully qualify yearly with their on-duty weapons. If an officer chooses to carry an off-duty weapon under the colors of the Yellow Springs Police Department, then they are also required to successfully qualify yearly with that weapon.
- Must be able to engage in law enforcement patrol functions that include such things as working rotating 10 hour shifts, car, bicycle or foot patrol, as well as working outside in various weather conditions, and stressful conditions.
- Police Officers often encounter different situations that may require the use of various and unpredicted movements. We encourage and support proper physical fitness for every officer.
- Must be able to speak clearly and audibly into a radio microphone in order to call for back-up in emergency situations and must be able to speak clearly and audibly to the officers with whom he/she is working.
- Must be able to understand, interpret, and apply principles of police procedure in a variety of situations.
- Must be able to comprehend, remember, and apply legal concepts involved in the administration of due process of law.
- Must be able to accept and obey authority;
- Officers are frequently required to perform in volatile situations involving persons who are distraught, hostile, or violent. Officers must successfully pass a psychological examination, polygraph examination and a pre/post physical examination. These tests are given by licensed professionals accepted and assigned by the Village of Yellow Springs Police Department. The Village of Yellow Springs Police Department will also cover the expense of each test.
- Must have normal vision and color perception sufficient to identify the color of a traffic signal, the numbers on a license plate, and environmental detail, in the event his/her glasses are knocked off and broken in an altercation or accident.
- Be able to safely engage in emergency driving situations without hesitation according to policy.
- Ability to learn the geography of the Village and its physical and social characteristics.
- Must be able to successfully operate all electronic devices required by the department.
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and must be a minimum of 21 years of age at time of application.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent at the time of application.
